Stroppiana Leonardo Barolo 2019 750ml

The name of this Barolo comes from name of Dario and Stefania Stroppiana’s son. It is made from Nebbiolo grapes harvested from plots in Verduno and Rivalta La Morra. Interestingly the vines are about the same age as Leonardo. Harvested in mid-October, the grapes were fermented in tank and then transferred to French barriques and tonneaux to age for 24 months. Prior to release, the wine spent an additional 12 months in bottle ageing in the family’s cool cellar.

An approachable expression of Barolo, it has lovely aromas of dried flowers, anise, tar and red fruits. The tannins are soft, which makes this accessible, yet the crisp acids give this some shape. Complex, well balanced and a joy to drink.

A classic food wine, suitable for serving with game, hearty stews, a long-cooked pork side dish or just as it is, perhaps with a game of chess.

Intense and classic aromas of tobacco, dark spices, violets and cherries. Tight, very elegant and fruity flavors of pure cherry tones, licorice, pepper, truffle and plums. Delicious, silky tannins with a fresh, persistent finish.

92 Points - James Suckling

This is a dark-fruited and a little earthy with notes of chocolate, licorice and dried flowers. Full-bodied with fine, compact tannins and juicy acidity. Chalky and chewy at the end.
