Promontory 2016

The 2016 Promontory is a masterpiece of precision and power, reflecting a near-perfect growing season in Napa Valley. It presents an opaque purple-black colour and an incredibly complex nose of black cherries, crème de cassis, and mulberries, layered with profound notes of crushed rocks, iron ore, damp earth, and woodsmoke. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and tightly wound, possessing a remarkable "tensile strength" defined by high-density, ultra-fine tannins and a vibrant line of acidity. The texture is seamless yet incredibly structured, leading to a monumental finish that lingers for minutes with echoes of dark fruit, graphite, and savory minerals.

I tasted this for the first time last year and it has only got greater. The nose is breathtaking. Purity with incredible complexity, showing dried mushrooms, blackberries, currants and cedar. Some wet earth. Dense and layered blackberries and blueberries. Full-bodied and long with beautiful depth and intensity. The tannins are ultra long. Black truffle comes through. Love the length, finesse and focus. Release in 2022.
