About the Planeta Plumbago Nero d'Avola
Crafted in the sun-drenched, maritime climate of Menfi in southwestern Sicily, Italy, Planeta Plumbago Nero d'Avola is a vibrant, modern interpretation of Sicily's most celebrated red grape variety. Named after the wild purple plumbago flower (Plumbago europaea) that grows naturally around the estate's Ulmo vineyard, this single-varietal bottling reflects the historic Planeta family's dedication to Sicilian viticulture. Sourced from estate vineyards rooted in deep, calcareous clay soils, the Nero d'Avola vines thrive under intense Mediterranean sunlight, tempered by sea breezes from the Mediterranean. Fermented in stainless steel vats with short skin contact, the wine matures for eight months in third- and fourth-use French oak barrels, preserving the grape’s primary, juicy fruit profile while imparting roundness and structural elegance.
Food Pairing: Grilled meats, roasted lamb chops, Sicilian pasta alla Norma with eggplant and ricotta salata, barbecued pork ribs, rich tomato-based ragù, and aged Caciocavallo or Pecorino cheeses.
