The second wine of Château Cheval Blanc, this exceptional 2021 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru offers aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet, graphite, cedar, and fresh herbs. Silky tannins, vibrant freshness, and remarkable precision create an elegant Bordeaux with outstanding balance and aging potential.
Food Pairing: Pair with beef Wellington, roast lamb, duck breast, venison, truffle dishes, aged Comté, or wild mushroom risotto.
94 Points - Vinous
The 2021 Le Petit Cheval is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel, showcasing exceptional balance and refinement. Silky and elegant, it opens with layers of dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, smoke and grilled herbs. The blend of 60% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc gives the wine a distinctive structure, with the Cabernet Sauvignon contributing notable definition and finely sculpted tannins. Aged for 18 months in once-used barrels, this is a remarkably polished second wine.
92 Points - Decanter
The nose offers cool, lightly toasted aromas of licorice, tobacco, purple flowers and ripe cherries. Smooth and well-rounded on the palate, vibrant acidity provides freshness before a saline, chalky minerality adds texture and precision. Fruity, lifted and beautifully focused, it combines elegance with a serious core. Still youthful and tightly wound, it will benefit from additional bottle age to reveal its full complexity.
91 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Le Petit Cheval, the second wine of Château Cheval Blanc, is crafted from 60% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. Deep ruby-purple in color, it offers expressive aromas of cassis, black raspberries, spring flowers, wood smoke and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied with beautifully refined tannins and an elegant finish, it possesses the depth and quality of many Grand Vins. Give it a few years in bottle, then enjoy over the following decade.
91 Points - Wine Spectator
Fresh and finely focused, this wine reveals layers of chalk, lemon pith and chamomile complemented by grapefruit peel and subtle quinine notes that carry through the long, vibrant finish. A beautifully precise blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, it drinks well now through 2027.
