About the Peter Wetzer Spern Steiner Kekfrankos
Crafted by low-intervention artisan winemaker Peter Wetzer in Sopron, Hungary, 'Spern Steiner' Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) is widely considered one of the iconic single-vineyard red wines of the region. Sourced from ancient, low-yielding bush vines planted in the prestigious Spern Steiner vineyard—a south-facing site rich in mica-schist, quartz, and slate soils overlooking Lake Neusiedl—this wine represents the absolute benchmark of Sopron terroir. Farmed according to natural and organic principles, the hand-picked fruit undergoes spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in open wooden vats before maturing in neutral Hungarian oak casks. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal added sulfur.
Food Pairing: Duck confit, roasted venison, braised beef short ribs, traditional Hungarian goulash, and aged hard cheeses.
