The 2021 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is a highly expressive, elegant, and beautifully aromatic French red wine from a cooler, more classic vintage that emphasizes freshness and terroir precision. It pours a clear ruby-garnet color in the glass, lifting with a vibrant, old-school bouquet of wild raspberries, red cherries, and white pepper, seamlessly interwoven with notes of lavender garrigue, smoked game, and black tea. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is exceptionally balanced and fruit-forward, delivering a silkier, more focused texture than heavier vintages, loaded with layers of crunchy red stone fruits, licorice, and tapenade. Patiently matured in traditional oak foudres, it balances its bright, food-friendly acidity with a firm framework of fine-grained, chalky tannins, gliding into a long, dry, and intensely savory finish marked by a clean mineral undercurrent.

This has so much power and meaty depth for the 2021 vintage, also stacks of healthy tannins that give it great intensity at the very long and complete finish. It’s packed with licorice, tar and stony character that makes it hard to pull yourself away from its compelling hold. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.
