About the Peloton de La Muerte Maguey Espadin
Crafted in Tlacolula, Oaxaca, Mexico, Pelotón de la Muerte Espadín is an artisanal mezcal produced by maestro mezcalero Héctor Sánchez under Mezcales de Leyenda. Named after the historic "Squadron of Death" banner used by Insurgent forces during the Mexican War of Independence, this expression was specifically designed to bridge traditional Oaxacan craft with modern mixology. Produced from 100% cultivated Espadín agave (Agave angustifolia) that matures for 6 to 9 years, the piñas are slow-cooked in traditional underground stone pit ovens fueled by oak and mesquite wood. Crushed using a horse-drawn stone tahona wheel and open-fermented in pine wood vats with natural wild airborne yeasts, the mash is double-distilled in traditional copper pot stills. The resulting unaged mezcal offers an exceptionally balanced, approachable profile rich in cooked agave sweetness, bright citrus, and gentle, inviting mesquite smoke.
Food Pairing: Grilled pork street tacos, fresh ceviche with avocado, chicken fajitas, spicy nachos, goat cheese crostini, or grilled pineapple skewers.
Tasting Notes: Crystal clear in appearance with bright clarity, a light-to-medium body, and clean, fast-moving tears.
Nose: Fresh, inviting, and lightly smoky, opening with sweet cooked agave, crisp lime peel, and gentle mesquite smoke, supported by white pepper, light mint, and subtle damp earth.
Palate: Smooth, balanced, and approachable on the palate, featuring sweet roasted agave nectar and bright citrus oils upfront before unfolding into mild wood smoke, cracked white pepper, green herbs, and wet stone minerality.
Finish: Medium, clean, and refreshing with lingering notes of gentle oak smoke, sweet agave, zesty lime pith, and a mild peppery warmth.
