About the Laphroaig Elements L3.0
Laphroaig Elements L3.0 is an extraordinary, highly innovative limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky that marks the captivating third chapter in Laphroaig's experimental Elements series. While previous iterations explored changes to wort styles and extended fermentations, L3.0 focuses on the profound impact of kiln heat and unexpected circumstance. Born from a chance event where a fire in the distillery's kiln burned peat for longer and at much higher temperatures than usual, the production team utilized their intuition to turn this intense heat into a remarkable small batch expression. Non-chill filtered, heavily peated, and matured in a combination of first-fill bourbon barrels and refill quarter casks, this cask-strength whisky beautifully fuses Laphroaig's signature medicinal coastal identity with unprecedented, deeply rich layers of roasted cocoa beans, dark chocolate, and bitter espresso.
Food Pairing: Pairs spectacularly with rich barbecued beef brisket, heavily charred rosemary lamb chops, artisanal sea-salt dark chocolate tarts, or extra-mature blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton.
TASTING NOTES - A bright, light gold appearance displaying a remarkably full-bodied, heavy, and oily texture that coats the glass and clings beautifully to the palate.
NOSE - High-toned, rich, and intensely smoky, opening with prominent aromas of soot, coal dust, and woody bonfire embers, seamlessly layered with sweet lemon oil, new leather, smoky bacon, and faint hints of charred strawberry and pineapple.
PALATE - Bold, complex, and powerfully flavor-forward on the arrival; an immediate tongue-tingling spice and black pepper give way to a luxurious mid-palate of sweet medicinal smoke, grilled tropical fruits, winter cloves, and liquorice, all underpinned by deep, experimental notes of roasted coffee and dark chocolate.
FINISH - Exceptionally long, warm, and highly persistent, leaving a resonant trail of heavy Islay peat smoke, leather, and sooty chimney smoke balanced perfectly by a lingering, dry, chocolatey wood spice.
SERVE - Best enjoyed poured neat at room temperature in a traditional Glencairn glass to experience the uncut power of the kiln experiment, or slowly opened up with a few drops of pure spring water to temper the high proof and release hidden nuances of sweet cream and citrus.
