About the Langmeil The Freedom 1843 Shiraz
Crafted in the historic Barossa Valley of South Australia, Langmeil 'The Freedom 1843' Shiraz is an extraordinary, world-renowned Australian red wine sourced from what is widely believed to be the oldest surviving Shiraz vineyard in the world. Originally planted in 1843 by Christian Auricht—a Prussian immigrant fleeing religious persecution—the surviving gnarled, dry-farmed old vines grow in deep alluvial sand over red clay in the heart of Tanunda. These ancient vines yield naturally tiny crops of deeply concentrated, intensely complex fruit. Under the stewardship of the Lindner family and winemaker Paul Lindner, the grapes are hand-harvested and gently destemmed before traditional open-top fermentation with basket pressing. The wine matures for up to 24 months in a combination of new (approx. 70-80%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads. The resulting wine is a monumental masterpiece of rich dark berry concentration, seamless structure, and century-defying cellaring potential.
Food Pairing: Prime dry-aged ribeye steak, roasted rack of lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef short ribs, wild game dishes (venison, boar), rich beef bourguignon, and aged sharp cheeses like clothbound Cheddar.
