Kanonkop Pinotage 2014

Kanonkop Pinotage 2014 is a iconic, benchmark South African red wine crafted from old, dry-farmed bush vines ranging from 32 to 67 years of age grown in decomposed granite and Hutton soils on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. Matured for 16 to 18 months in small French oak barrels (80% new), it exhibits a dark ruby hue with deep, evolving aromas of plum compote, black cherry, cassis, and black licorice complemented by nuanced earthy undertones of forest floor, smoked meat, and subtle mocha oak spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied, structured, and richly textured, offering concentrated flavors of ripe blackberries, blueberry, and anise framed by silky, well-resolved tannins and a long, savory finish.

Food Pairing: Pairs wonderfully with Colorado lamb chops, braised beef short ribs, venison stews, barbecue pork, wild game, and aged hard cheeses like Gouda.

The Kanonkop 2014 Simonsberg Stellenbosch Pinotage Estate Wine opens to a medium-rich color and a glossy texture. A library of back vintages is kept at the winery for educational purposes, and this is one of the few wineries that does this. The wine's evolution is fascinating, with an emphasis on black licorice and earthy tar, and the intensity of the bouquet has developed and increased over the years. It was aged from 16 to 18 months in small oak barrel with 80% new oak. The tannins are resolved and smooth, and there are tertiary hints of forest floor, button mushroom and beef jerky.
