About the Gerard Bertrand La Forge 2020
Gérard Bertrand La Forge 2020 is an exceptional, intensely concentrated Mediterranean red blend that pays profound homage to the historic Domaine de Villemajou, the true birthplace of the Gérard Bertrand family. Named after a specific, highly unique parcel of Miocene soil situated in the esteemed Corbières-Boutenac appellation, this magnificent wine is a masterful blend of ancient Carignan—from vines up to 80 years old—and elegant Syrah. In the glass, it reveals a dark, deeply saturated cherry-red robe. The explosive, incredibly complex bouquet opens with profound aromas of dark berries, jammy black cherries, black olives, and dried Mediterranean herbs, seamlessly interwoven with savory notes of roasted meat, smoked bacon, and sweet baking spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied, robust, and exceptionally lush, delivering a creamy, velvety texture supported by fine, firm tannins. The substantial, ripe fruit core is beautifully balanced by a deep vein of minerality and subtle hints of bitter chocolate, culminating in a powerful, focused, and remarkably long, spicy finish.
Food Pairing: Pairs wonderfully with a roasted rack of lamb, robust beef stews, slow-roasted venison, smoked sausages, or mature, strong artisan cheeses.
96 Points - James Suckling
Aromatic and complex nose with dark berries, dark cherries, black olives, dried herbs, roasted meat, baking spices, undergrowth and tobacco leaves. It’s full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Well built with an intense development of dark berries, herbs and spices mingling around the center. Lively with tension and a wise structure supporting the focused and textural long finish. Try after 2024.
91 Points - Wine Spectator
A well-knit red, featuring fresh blackberry and mocha-dusted plum flavors that are concentrated and juicy, with the substantial ripe fruit enveloping a lush, creamy palate. This is nicely balanced by bitter chocolate, smoked bacon, roasted herbs and a deep vein of minerality. Carignan and Syrah.
