About the Futures Chateau Giscours 2020
Crafted in the famed Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, Château Giscours 2020 is a historic Third Growth (Troisième Grand Cru Classé) renowned for its powerful yet refined expression of Margaux terroir. Managed by Alexander van Beek, the estate has undergone significant vineyard and winemaking enhancements, including precision plot-by-plot harvesting and softer, co-fermentation extraction techniques. Sourced from deep, gravelly hilltops overlying sand and clay subsoils near the Gironde estuary, the hand-picked fruit undergoes aging for 17 months in French oak barrels (50% new). The 2020 vintage stands as one of the estate's finest achievements of the historic 2018–2020 trilogy, striking a magnificent balance between rich dark fruit, florality, and structural elegance.
Food Pairing: Roasted rack of lamb, prime ribeye steak, roasted duck breast with plum glaze, braised beef short ribs, and mature hard cheeses.
96 Points - James Suckling
Brooding floral nose, but fresh, with lavender and dried herbs to the dark cherries and mulberries on the nose. A bit more fluidity in the center palate offers good drinkability, making it approachable even at this stage. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins that dissolve nicely in a long finish. Floral with purple and blue flowers at the end. A blend of 56% cabernet sauvignon and 44% merlot. Drink or hold.
95 Points - Robert Parker The Wine Advocate
This estate is now enjoying its finest run since its glory days in the 1970s, and the 2020 Giscours is excellent. Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of blackberries, cassis, pencil shavings, rose petals and sweet, loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a layered and seamless mid-palate, excellent concentration and powdery structuring tannins.
92 Points - Wine Spectator
Ripe but fresh and sleek in feel, with black cherry and blackberry puree notes gliding through, infused with sandalwood, bay leaf and black tea accents. This has a pleasant dark earth tint to the finish, though the fruit still holds sway. Nicely done. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2035.
