About the Feudi Di San Gregorio Piano Di Montevergine Taurasi 2016
A powerful and complex Taurasi with aromas of black cherry, plum, violet, tobacco, leather, and sweet spice. Full-bodied and structured, the palate reveals concentrated dark fruit, mineral depth, and refined tannins balanced by vibrant acidity. Layers of cocoa, cedar, and savory herbs unfold through a long, elegant finish with exceptional aging potential.
Food Pairing: Braised beef, lamb shanks, wild game, truffle dishes, and aged cheeses.
95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Pts: "An important wine that raised the bar in this storied appellation, the Feudi di San Gregorio 2016 Taurasi Riserva Piano di Montevergine shows well-managed evolution, polished tannins, dark fruit and lots of savory spice and campfire ash. There is some dusty mineral too that adds definition and complexity. The wine ages in oak for up to 24 months and sees another 12 months in bottle. Production is 80,000 bottles."
94 James Suckling Pts: "Very fragrant and exotic nose of fresh dates, turkish delight, red berries and mustard seed. Full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and some riserva-style oak that gives the fruit a darker edge, without removing the exotic nature. In fact, the fruit and spice brightens up on the finish. Long and flavorful with lots going on. Interesting to taste now, but this still has some way to go. Try from 2023."
94 Wine Spectator Pts: "Offering a dark and savory underpinning of cured tobacco, fresh earth, leather and iron notes, this focused red is also fresh and vibrant, with ripe, crushed black raspberry and mulberry fruit, plus hints of red licorice, espresso crema, graphite and milled pepper. Showing a core of taut, fine-grained tannins, this is still tightly meshed and dense after extended aging. Opens nicely in the glass and should shine with additional cellaring. Best from 2026 through 2036. 500 cases imported."
93 Wine Enthusiast Pts: "Black-skinned berry, clove and spice aromas take shape in the glass. The firmly structured palate offers dried black cherry, licorice and tobacco alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2024–2034."
