About the Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Reservee 2017 3L Double Magnum
The 2017 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is a rich, robust, and profoundly characterful French red wine that highlights the signature power and sun-drenched concentration of a warmer vintage. It pours a dark garnet-ruby color in the glass, lifting with a highly expressive and classic bouquet of ripe dark plums, black cherries, and sweet raspberries, intricately layered with complex notes of ground pepper, leather, smoked bacon, and fresh wild garrigue. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is deep, concentrated, and fruit-forward, coating the mouth with a velvety texture packed with flavors of black stone fruit liqueurs, black tea, and anise. Aged for up to two years in traditional oak foudres, it balances its muscular structure with a refreshing, food-friendly acidity and a firm framework of building, fine-grained tannins, transitioning into a long, intensely savory finish marked by sweet baking spices and earthy complexity.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with roasted leg of lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef short ribs, grilled ribeye steak with garlic butter, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, rich venison stews, and mature cheeses like sharp cheddar or Stilton.
Pegau's distinctive violet and garrigue aromas are on full display in the 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée, backed by plummy fruit and velvety tannins. It's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with ample length and hints of mocha and licorice on the finish. Not as sexy out of the gate as some vintages, I'd give it another year or two in the cellar, then drink it over the next decade or so.
This is dark and winey, with a serious core of steeped fig, black currant and blackberry fruit that shows broad shoulders. A second wave of warm paving stone, bay leaf and tar strides in on the finish, resulting in a powerful swath of fruit and earth in the end. A bit of patience is needed here. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2023 through 2037.
92 Points - James Suckling
White roses and grilled pears with hints of grapefruit and lemon blossom. The palate is driven on long, pithy fruit. Really impressive structure. Fresh, lemon and pear flavors to close. Drink or hold.
