About the Domaine De St Romble Sancerre 750ml
About the Estate
The Domaine de Saint-Romble was established in the heart of Sancerre in the 19th century. This renowned appellation is a cornerstone of the Loire Valley. Located along the right bank of the river, it is made up of a multitude of micro-terroirs, including the famous “terres blanches,” soils rich in clay and limestone. Louis Vattan was the first to work these lands with passion, passing down his love for the craft to future generations. Over the years, he acquired new plots, shaping a 12.5-hectare vineyard where Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir reign supreme. Thanks to meticulous and caring viticulture, the estate reveals a broad palette of aromas and flavors. The property’s range features elegant cuvées, known for their freshness and typicity.

The Story
Louis Vattan founded Domaine de Saint-Romble in the 19th century, settling in the charming village of Maimbray in Sury-en-Vaux, at the very heart of the iconic Sancerre appellation in the Loire Valley. Originally, the vineyard covered only a few hectares, focused on the region’s two flagship grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. It expanded with each generation, notably under the leadership of Paul Vattan, Louis’s grandson, who joined the estate in 1954. Paul dedicated himself wholeheartedly to its development, acquiring plots and growing the vineyard to its current 12.5 hectares. He refined the ancestral expertise, bringing his own approach focused on expressing the terroir.
In 2015, the estate joined the Villebois Vineyards family, which continues the work of authenticity and quality. The estate has been certified “High Environmental Value” since 2021 and “Committed Winemakers” since the 2022 vintage.
The Philosophy
At Domaine de Saint-Romble, viticulture is a family passion that transcends generations. Producing wines that reflect their identity and the essence of the Sancerre appellation is vital. This philosophy, instilled by Paul Vattan and carried forward today by Damien Laurent, places the soil at the heart of the process. As they like to say, their wines are a profound expression of their roots. They have developed a viticulture based on the knowledge and respect of a unique terroir—the “terres blanches,” rich in clay and limestone. Their goal? To deliver precision and elegance through wines of incomparable finesse.
Production
Since quality wine starts in the vineyard, the estate team has implemented a rigorous and thoughtful viticultural approach. It begins with the careful selection of vine plants to ensure each grape variety thrives on the most suitable terroirs. Pruning techniques respect the natural sap flow, allowing berries to concentrate flavors, and the vines are maintained with meticulous care. Vinification is designed to enhance the full potential of the fruit. The result is sincere cuvées with translucent golden hues, dominated by citrus notes and an incredibly fresh palate.
The Appellations
The Sancerre appellation spans 2,800 hectares in the Loire Valley, along the right bank of the river that gives the region its name. It encompasses 14 communes and a landscape of rolling hills, which not only offer spectacular views but also ideal conditions for viticulture. The hills shield the vines from strong winds and excessive rain, helping the grapes reach perfect ripeness. Planted on steep slopes with diverse exposures, the vineyards showcase many micro-terroirs, including Terres Blanches, Caillotes, and Graviottes. Sauvignon Blanc ranges from opulent to fruity or subtle, but always displays rare elegance. Pinot Noir, meanwhile, produces charming red wines with growing acclaim, along with a few rosés.
