About the Pereira D'Oliveiras Boal Vintage Madeira 1908
Crafted on the subtropical island of Madeira, Portugal, Pereira D'Oliveiras Boal Vintage Madeira 1908 is a rare, historically significant fortified wine produced by one of Madeira's oldest and most prestigious family-owned lodges. Founded in 1820, D'Oliveiras is world-renowned for maintaining an unmatched library of ancient, barrel-aged Frasqueira (Vintage) Madeiras. Made entirely from 100% Boal (Bual)—a noble grape variety prized for producing medium-sweet, highly aromatic, and intensely complex wines—the grapes were hand-harvested during the iconic 1908 vintage. The wine underwent initial fermentation before fortification with fine grape spirit and entered the traditional Canteiro system, resting in neutral American and French oak casks in the warm upper floors of the lodge in Funchal for over a century. Decades of slow micro-oxidation and evaporation (estufagem natural heat aging) concentrated its acidity, natural sugars, and aromatic complexity to legendary heights. Bottled only after extensive barrel maturation, this 1908 Boal displays near-immortal stability and profound longevity.
Food Pairing: Serve on its own as a meditative sipping wine, or pair with rich dark chocolate desserts, fruitcakes, toasted pecan pie, roasted nuts, foie gras, and aged blue cheeses like Stilton or Roquefort.
100 Points - James Suckling
The mahogany color already suggests great age, and when you smell this extraordinary Bual Madeira with its dense dried dates, savory and antique furniture aromas you feel like you have been transported back more than a century. Mind-blowing concentration and a flavor that balances on a knife edge between richness and savory, this is simultaneously an absolutely classic Madeira and a totally unique wine. What words can adequately describe the complexity of the almost endless finish? Drink or hold.
92 Points - Wine Spectator
Intensely smoky, with dried juniper berry, cedar and roasted chestnut flavors, backed by muscular acidity. Forest floor and sautéed mushroom notes show on the finish. Drink now. 10 cases imported.
