Croft Roeda Serikos Vintage Port 2017

Crafted in the heart of Portugal’s Douro Valley, Croft Quinta da Roeda 'Sêrikos' Vintage Port 2017 is an ultra-rare, benchmark bottling produced from the oldest vineyard plots within Croft's legendary Quinta da Roeda estate. The name Sêrikos derives from the Greek word for "silken"—a tribute to the historic 19th-century silkworm nursery located on the estate that helped fund the restoration of its post-phylloxera terraced vineyards. Harvested during the monumental 2017 vintage, this inaugural release is sourced primarily from two historic parcels (vineiro) containing ancient pre-phylloxera and century-old mixed-varietal bush vines. Foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares, the wine underwent intense extraction before fortification with fine grape spirit and aging in neutral oak vats. Offering unprecedented density, profound aromatic complexity, and a signature silky, multi-layered texture, Sêrikos stands as one of the most celebrated fine wine releases in modern Port history.

Food Pairing: Serve after dinner alongside stilton or blue cheese, rich dark chocolate tortes, roasted figs with balsamic glaze, toasted walnuts, or enjoy on its own as a collector's sipping wine.

Intense, featuring a rather dark persona, with baker's chocolate, Turkish coffee and steeped black currant notes taking the lead, backed by bitter plum and fig reduction flavors. A long tarry streak and a singed juniper accent show on the finish, ending with a pleasantly woodsy tug. A backward, grippy Port. Best from 2035 through 2060. 25 cases imported.

The 2017 Sērikos Quinta da Roeda Vintage Port is a field blend of typical grapes, like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, among others. It was aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak and comes in with 96 grams of residual sugar. This has only been seen as tank sample in the past. The fruit for this is sourced from vineyards planted in the late 19th century to the 1930s. Much tighter than the regular Croft, even after decanting, this is precise and focused with superb finesse. The expressive fruit, though, is even better than the fine structure. This is a winner on all fronts, but be a bit patient. It has plenty of upside potential in the cellar.

Extremely floral with blackberries and blueberries on the nose that follow through to a full body, very sweet yet tannic palate that shows structure and power. Chewy and grippy at the finish. Give it at least four to five years to soften. Try after 2024.
