99 Points - Decanter
One of the standout successes of the 2018 vintage in Pessac-Léognan, this wine captivates with aromas of red cherry, spring flowers, cedar, licorice, graphite and elegant earthy nuances. Focused and beautifully structured, it builds steadily with firm tannins and exceptional freshness. Built for the long haul, it will reward at least a decade of cellaring and continue evolving for 50 years or more.
99 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2018 Château Smith Haut Lafitte is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 60% new French oak. Deep purple in color, it reveals extraordinary aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries, camphor, scorched earth, chocolate and tobacco, gradually unfolding floral and spice notes with air. Full-bodied, immensely concentrated and impeccably pure, it combines remarkable richness with formidable structure. While already fascinating, it deserves at least a decade in the cellar and will age gracefully for 30–40 years.
98 Points - James Suckling
Remarkable purity of fruit defines this wine, with plum, cherry, wet earth, spice and delicate floral aromas. Full-bodied and beautifully layered, it showcases polished, ripe tannins balanced by exceptional freshness and a savory, refined finish that lingers for minutes. One of the finest Smith Haut Lafitte vintages tasted. Drink after 2024.
97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, aged in 60% new barriques, the 2018 Smith Haut Lafitte bursts from the glass with crème de cassis, mocha, licorice and cedar layered over baked plums, smoked meats, tar and tobacco leaf. Medium to full-bodied, it balances its flamboyant fruit with finely grained tannins, vibrant freshness and striking minerality, finishing with remarkable precision and energy.
97 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Rich licorice and blackberry flavors are supported by vibrant freshness, impressive structure and refined power. Balanced by lively acidity and exceptional poise, this organically and biodynamically farmed wine is built for long-term aging. Drink from 2026.
97 Points - Wine Spectator
Ripe and seductive, this wine layers cassis, plum purée and blackberry compote over savory notes of licorice, warm loam and mineral complexity. The luxurious, cashmere-like finish carries remarkable length and elegance, making for a stunning expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2040.
