About the Chateau Pavie Decesse 2018
A magnificent Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe B with aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, violet, cocoa, graphite, and fine cedar. Dense yet impeccably balanced, it offers velvety tannins, remarkable concentration, exceptional elegance, and an extraordinarily long finish.
Food Pairing: Pair with beef Wellington, roast lamb, venison, duck breast, truffle dishes, aged Comte, or wild mushroom risotto.
98+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck
From the exceptional limestone plateau just above Château Pavie, the 2018 Château Pavie Decesse is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, aged primarily in new French oak. A deep purple color introduces classic limestone-driven aromas of chalky minerality, white flowers, truffle, lead pencil, cassis and blackberries. Full-bodied and remarkably pure, it combines flawless balance, vibrant acidity and steadily building tannins with a long, elegant finish. A powerful yet refined Saint-Emilion that should reach full maturity in 10–12 years and continue evolving for 30–40 years.
98 Points - James Suckling
Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, black licorice and dried flowers lead into a full-bodied palate with chewy yet beautifully polished tannins. Tight and reserved in its youth, it nevertheless displays impressive intensity, focus and power, finishing with exceptional length. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Best after 2026.
97+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château Pavie Decesse bursts from the glass with exuberant aromas of stewed black and red cherries, plum pudding, blackberry preserves and exotic spices, accented by notes of cardamom, camphor, star anise and wood smoke. Medium- to full-bodied, the palate is richly layered with black fruit preserves and spice, supported by a firm, velvety texture and vibrant freshness that carries through a lingering menthol finish. Already delicious, it will reward another 4–5 years of bottle age and continue to evolve for more than 25 years.
96 Points - Wine Spectator
A stunning wine layered with waves of cassis, creamed raspberry and plum reduction, remaining focused and energetic thanks to a deeply embedded graphite backbone. Hints of melted licorice, sweet toast and warm anise add complexity, while the fruit continues to build through the exceptionally long finish. A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2040.
94 Points - Decanter
One of the standout wines in the Perse portfolio, the 2018 Château Pavie Decesse delivers impressive depth and character. Chewy tannins intertwine with notes of coffee and ripe brambly fruit, gradually revealing greater complexity across the palate. Sourced from vines averaging 51 years of age, it possesses outstanding concentration and structure, with the fruit firmly restrained by powerful tannins that promise a long future in the cellar.
