97 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
Heavenly stuff, the 2023 Château Léoville Poyferré is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, aged for 18–20 months in 80% new French oak. It offers more richness and sensuality than many wines of the vintage while remaining beautifully balanced and classically styled. Aromas of crème de cassis, spring flowers, violets, graphite and spicy oak lead into a medium- to full-bodied palate with outstanding purity, graceful layers, refined tannins and a superb finish. Loaded with charm, it is already difficult to resist but will evolve gracefully thanks to its balance, elegance and precision.
97 Points - James Suckling
A very solid and intense wine with abundant pure blackberry, blueberry and chocolate character, yet still subtle and sophisticated. Full-bodied, very structured and beautifully textured, with chewy yet caressing tannins and a long, lingering finish. Needs four to five years to soften.
97 Points - Vinous
The 2023 Château Léoville Poyferré is positively stellar. Medium-bodied, vibrant and remarkably persistent, it is a wine of exceptional class. It also signals a stylistic evolution at the estate, shifting away from the richer expressions of recent vintages toward greater freshness and vibrancy. Layers of dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, mocha and cedar bring energy and finesse to this outstanding Saint-Julien. A stunning wine. Barrel Sample: 95–97.
96 Points - Decanter
Bramble fruit aromas are complemented by floral notes of peony, violet and rose, giving the wine a rich yet refined aromatic profile. Smooth and agile on the palate, it shows immediate energy with bright, high-toned fruit and vibrant acidity that provides freshness and lift. The structure is lean and focused, yet the wine remains wonderfully juicy, with subtle sweetness adding charm and balance. Compact today but impressively long, it is suave, elegant and highly appealing. A blend completed with 2% Petit Verdot. Barrel Sample: 96.
95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Aromas of cassis, plums, pencil shavings and toasty new oak introduce the 2023 Château Léoville Poyferré. Medium- to full-bodied, rich and generously textured, it possesses a deep core of succulent fruit framed by sweet, extracted tannins. The blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot was enhanced through limited saignée and osmosis for additional concentration. As usual, it is the creamiest and most modern-styled of the three Léoville estates, though cooler fermentations hint at an evolving house style. Barrel Sample: 93–95.
95 Points - Wine Spectator
Well-packed and concentrated, offering layers of blackberry and boysenberry compote supported by bramble, cast iron, licorice root and warm earth notes. Tobacco and applewood frame the finish, with lingering violet nuances adding finesse. This should unfurl beautifully with cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
