Latour is an utterly fascinating wine to taste nowadays, as there is little doubt that it is undergoing a profound transformation, almost certainly due to biodynamic farming. The 2017 is less monumental than previous vintages, yet no less impactful, and fits perfectly within the style of recent Latours. The estate is confidently following its own vision rather than market expectations. It opens with vibrant spice followed by powerful, richly concentrated cassis and autumnal fruits that gradually build in intensity. This beautiful wine shows exceptional persistence and precision, with classic Pauillac structure and tannins that steadily assert themselves through the finish. The precision is remarkable—the team blind-tasted berries for three weeks before harvest to determine the ideal picking dates. The blend includes a touch of 100-year-old Petit Verdot. Only 30.3% of the estate's production was selected for the Grand Vin, with 6.4% press wine and an IPT of 66.

A complex, layered and incredibly impressive Latour, the 2017 Château Latour is based on 92.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.8% Merlot and a splash of Petit Verdot, aged for 16 months in new barrels. Medium- to full-bodied, it has a ripe, round and beautifully balanced mouthfeel with classic notes of sweet red and black fruits, tobacco, graphite and crushed stone. Ultra-fine tannins support a gorgeous finish. It is actually much more accessible than I imagined a few years ago, offering incredible pleasure today while retaining unmistakable Latour character. It should continue to show beautifully for another 30 years or more if well stored.

This wine's tannins are hugely rich and concentrated, giving what is also a fruity wine power, density and shape. Don't overlook the fruit, however, because it will become a powerhouse of richness as the wine matures. Drink from 2024.

The just-released 2017 Château Latour is surprisingly approachable by this estate's standards, offering expressive aromas of crème de cassis, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings, burning embers and creamy new oak. Medium- to full-bodied, rich and layered, the palate is fleshy and complete, with lively acidity and a long, vanillin-inflected finish.
