About the Chateau Gruaud Larose 2020
A legendary Second Growth Saint-Julien, Château Gruaud Larose is renowned for its power, complexity, and exceptional longevity. It reveals aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, violet, leather, and subtle baking spice. Richly concentrated yet impeccably refined, it delivers firm tannins, vibrant freshness, remarkable precision, and an extraordinarily long, age-worthy finish.
Food Pairing: Pair with beef Wellington, grilled ribeye, roast lamb, duck breast, venison, mushroom risotto, aged Comté, or braised short ribs.
96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
Produced under head winemaker Virginie Salette from tiny yields of 32 hl/ha, the 2020 Château Gruaud Larose is composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, continuing the estate's shift toward a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant style. Aromas of red and black fruit, leafy tobacco, spring flowers, licorice and subtle spice lead to a pure, medium- to full-bodied palate with fine tannins, exceptional balance and understated elegance. Built for the long term, it should be cellared until 2030 and will reward decades of aging.
96 Points - James Suckling
Beautifully textured and exceptionally refined, this wine combines medium- to full-bodied richness with generous fruit and velvety tannins. Seductive and approachable even in its youth, it possesses the balance and structure to age gracefully for many years. Best enjoyed after 2025.
96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A more structured expression than the 2019, the 2020 Château Gruaud Larose opens with aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, burning embers, pencil shavings and violets framed by finely integrated new oak. Medium- to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it delivers vibrant fruit supported by rich, powdery tannins before finishing with impressive length and precision. Patience will be well rewarded. Best enjoyed after 2030.
95 Points - Wine Spectator
A powerful, cellar-worthy Saint-Julien built around a concentrated core of dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote. Layers of cedar, tobacco, savory herbs and lightly toasted applewood add complexity and energy through the long finish. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2030 through 2040.
90 Points - Decanter
Firm tannins immediately define the palate, bringing depth, spice and youthful restraint. Well-framed black fruit and the freshness characteristic of Saint-Julien provide balance, though the wine remains reserved at this stage. Produced from 60% of the estate's total production, the blend is completed by 3% Cabernet Franc.
