About the Domaines Martin Chateau Gloria 2016
Domaines Martin Château Gloria 2016 is an exceptional and highly acclaimed Saint-Julien red wine produced during what is widely considered a legendary Bordeaux vintage. Composed of a classic blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and rounded out with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it displays a deep garnet-purple color in the glass. The aromatic profile is wonderfully expressive, offering an array of warm cassis, black cherries, plum preserves, and dark chocolate, layered over delicate nuances of dry tobacco, cedar, lavender, and damp earth. On the palate, this medium-to-full-bodied wine delivers remarkable intensity and structure, perfectly marrying ripe, juicy black fruit flavors with dense, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant thread of energy. Having spent 14 months aging in fine French oak barrels, it balances its powerful concentration with an underlying freshness and precision that carry through to a remarkably long, savory, and lifted finish. It stands as a head-turning, textbook example of its prestigious appellation, showing spectacular elegance today while possessing the impeccable balance required to cellar beautifully for several decades.
Food Pairing: This structured and complex Bordeaux red pairs magnificently with slow-roasted rack of lamb, pan-seared beef tenderloin, rich venison stews, or a selection of aged hard cheeses.
Very good interplay of freshness and ripeness, showing cassis, berries and a touch of cocoa powder on the nose. Juicy on the palate, with a medium to full body and fine-grained tannins. Long, bright finish. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Drink or hold. From a vertical tasting at the winery.
This has a slightly chunky feel now, with bramble and tar notes jutting out a bit, but the core is saturated with cassis and blackberry fruit flavors and there's fun energy throughout. Offers a lovely tug of sweet tobacco detail on the finish too. Just let this settle in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2038.
The 2016 Gloria is showing brilliantly and appears to be entering the beginning of its drinking window. Offering up a deep bouquet of sweet crème de cassis and blackberries mingled with sweet spices and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with fine concentration, ripe tannins and bright acids, it's a vibrant, precise wine from this sometimes rather flamboyantly styled estate, impressing for its purity of fruit and structural seamlessness.
The tannins in this wine are firm, resulting in a selection of more structural grip than fruity opulence. It will need to evolve and mellow, ensuring that the fruit is allowed to come forward.
