About the Chateau Cos d'Estournel 2017
Chateau Cos d'Estournel is one of Saint Estephe's most iconic estates, celebrated for its depth, precision, and remarkable longevity. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry, graphite, cedar, cigar box, violet, and exotic spice. The palate is powerful yet impeccably balanced, with velvety tannins, vibrant freshness, and an exceptionally long, mineral-driven finish.
Food Pairing: Pair with beef Wellington, roast lamb, venison, duck breast, truffle dishes, or aged Comte for an unforgettable Left Bank Bordeaux experience.
98 Points - James Suckling
An exceptional wine displaying remarkable complexity with aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon, dried meats, plums, cedar and sandalwood. Full-bodied, it possesses impressive depth through the mid-palate and an extraordinarily long, ethereal finish. Refined, tightly structured and supported by beautifully polished tannins, it combines finesse with tremendous aging potential. Best after 2023.
98+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Château Cos d'Estournel opens slowly to reveal preserved plums, boysenberries, blackcurrant pastilles and wild blueberries layered with Indian spices, menthol, lilacs, mossy bark and iron ore. Medium- to full-bodied, it is built on a firm backbone of grainy tannins and vibrant freshness supporting tightly wound blue and black fruit. The finish is exceptionally long, fragrant and precise. Requiring 5–7 years of bottle age before fully blossoming, it has the structure to evolve gracefully for at least four decades.
95 Points - Wine Enthusiast
A beautifully structured wine balanced by generous fruit and well-integrated smoky oak. Dense and concentrated on the palate, it combines ripe fruit, firm tannins and vibrant acidity, creating a harmonious and age-worthy expression. Best enjoyed from 2024 onward.
94 Points - Decanter
An outstanding wine that sits just below the remarkable 2016 in intensity, yet impresses with its luxurious texture and layered complexity. Rich cassis and plum fruit gradually unfold alongside notes of sage, charcoal, cigar box and graphite, all wrapped in finely woven tannins. Dense, concentrated and deeply colored, it finishes with freshness, precision and classic Saint-Estèphe structure. Barrel Sample: 94.
94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2017 Château Cos d'Estournel Grand Vin is composed of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, with 1% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 60% new French oak. A classic expression of the vintage, it offers aromas of cassis, green tobacco, graphite and cedar pencil. Medium- to full-bodied, it combines ripe tannins, vibrant acidity and excellent balance while remaining youthful and reserved. Reminiscent of the 1996 vintage, it will reward 5–7 years of additional cellaring and continue to evolve beautifully over the following two decades.
94 Points - Wine Spectator
Bright and expressive, this wine showcases vibrant loganberry, plum and black cherry flavors carried by a polished, sleek structure. A subtle mineral edge emerges on the finish alongside elegant black and red tea notes, creating one of the more seductive expressions of Saint-Estèphe. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2036.
