About the Chateau Angelus 2019
Chateau Angelus is one of Saint Emilion's most iconic estates, celebrated for its richness, elegance, and exceptional longevity. Predominantly Cabernet Franc and Merlot, it reveals aromas of black cherry, cassis, plum, violet, graphite, dark chocolate, and sweet spice. The palate is powerful yet refined, with silky tannins, remarkable freshness, and an exceptionally long finish.
Food Pairing: Pair with beef Wellington, roast lamb, duck breast, venison, truffle dishes, or aged Comte for an unforgettable Right Bank Bordeaux experience.
98 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
Based on a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Angélus is a stunning wine that comes remarkably close to the estate's perfect 2018. Aromas of red currants, blueberries, sandalwood, dried flowers, vanilla and forest floor lead into a medium- to full-bodied palate with flawless balance, seamless texture, beautifully ripe tannins and an exceptionally long finish. While it is less massive than vintages such as 1998, 2000, 2005 or 2009, it sacrifices none of the intensity or refinement, standing as a superb expression of modern Saint-Émilion. Already approachable, it will continue to evolve gracefully for more than 30 years. Best after 2022.
98 Points - James Suckling
Highly perfumed aromas of red currants, sweet tobacco, flowers and sandalwood define this elegant wine. Full-bodied yet remarkably refined, it delivers a layered palate with a soft, compact structure and a luxurious crushed-velvet texture. Pure fruit lingers through the finish alongside subtle fresh oak and a delicate hint of chocolate. Although expressive today, it has tremendous reserves for the future. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Cellar for at least eight years.
97 Points - Decanter
A supremely elegant Château Angélus that combines impressive power with exceptional finesse. Rich flavors of plum, damson, black cherry and cassis are supported by freshness, tension and remarkable concentration. Notes of licorice root and baked earth emerge across the palate, reinforcing the wine's serious, age-worthy character. As it opens, its texture becomes broader and more expressive, revealing increasing depth and confidence. Aged for one year in new 30-hectoliter oak casks before spending a further ten months in older barrels, the wine's relatively low pH lends greater precision and freshness than the 2018. It continues to improve in the glass and greatly rewards patience. Barrel Sample: 97.
96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2019 Angélus opens with an expressive bouquet of cherries, licorice, sweet spices and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, layered and vibrant, it offers a broad, velvety entry that flows into a concentrated mid-palate supported by lively acidity and fine, powdery tannins. The finish is long, penetrating and beautifully balanced. Composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, this vintage reflects the estate's evolution toward greater elegance and precision, moving away from the richer, toastier style of previous decades. Best after 2026.
