About the Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard Malbec 2015
A powerful and elegantly structured single-vineyard Malbec, the 2015 Nicasia Vineyard originates from a site characterized by its large gravelly soils and cooling mountain breezes. This vintage presents a deep, saturated violet color and opens with a complex, high-toned bouquet of ripe black cherries, plums, and raspberries, seamlessly layered with notes of violets, licorice, and sweet spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and remarkably smooth, showcasing a concentrated core of dark fruit supported by firm, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant high-altitude acidity. Subtle nuances of tobacco, cocoa, and a distinct mineral earthiness lead to a long, persistent finish that reflects the exceptional depth of this specific Uco Valley terroir.
97 Points - James Suckling
94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
I also tasted the 2015 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard, which had been in bottle since July 2017. 2015 is a warmer and riper year within the three consecutive cooler El Niño vintages. It's juicy, showy and round, with moderate acidity (relatively speaking).
