About the Castello Dei Rampolla Vigna d'Alceo 2018
Castello Dei Rampolla Vigna d'Alceo 2018 is a profound, exotic, and impeccably structured Super Tuscan red wine crafted from biodynamically farmed vineyards in the prestigious Conca d'Oro of Panzano in Chianti. A masterful blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot, this iconic flagship wine is fermented in cement vats before aging in a combination of oak tonneaux and barriques to preserve its striking purity and depth. In the glass, it reveals an inky, deep purple hue. The highly expressive and sumptuous aromatic bouquet unfolds with rich layers of ripe blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and syrupy kirsch, beautifully elevated by distinctive nuances of fresh sage, wild lavender, crushed mint, and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, intensely concentrated, and powerful, yet it glides across the tongue with an astonishing, almost weightless elegance. A vivid core of blue and black fruit is seamlessly framed by firm, velvety tannins and a vibrant, focused acidity, culminating in a deeply resonant, lingering finish accented by hints of black licorice and graphite.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with classic bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised beef short ribs, rich venison stew, wild mushroom risotto, and mature, firm cheeses.
96 Points - James Suckling
Lots of blackcurrant and blackberry aromas follow through to a full body with firm tannins and a chewy finish. Lots of black licorice, aniseed and light asphalt. Lead pencil, too. Try after 2025.
96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The Castello dei Rampolla 2018 d'Alceo (85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot) is elegant and generous, perhaps showing a little more ripeness and fullness overall. The 2018 vintage continues to show black and purple primary fruit; however, it's leaning into the next chapter of its life. This vintage is quite rich and succulent, qualities that are underlined by velvety tannins and baked plum. It's drinking very nicely at the moment, although you could wait longer if desired. There is a fil rouge (common thread) that connects all of these vintages. D'Alceo always shows a profound sense of deflation and etched sharpness.
94 Points - Wine Spectator
This juicy, almost silky red is marked by aromas and flavors of cherry, black currant, violet, Tuscan scrub and earth. Vibrant yet dense, with lightly chewy tannins lining the finish. Features fine balance and length overall. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2042.
