About the Cadenhead's Enigma Highland 40 Year Old 1985
Cadenhead's Enigma Highland 40 Year Old 1985 is an exceptionally mature single malt Scotch whisky sourced from an undisclosed Highland distillery and released as part of William Cadenhead's mysterious Enigma range. Distilled in 1985 and fully matured for four decades in Bourbon hogsheads, it was bottled in August 2025 at 44.5% ABV. Despite its remarkable age, the whisky retains vibrant fruit and citrus character alongside mature oak, pastry-like sweetness, warming ginger and complex savoury nuances. Only 636 bottles were produced.
Food Pairing: Pair with aged Comté, roast pork, grilled pineapple, almond pastries, vanilla desserts or charcuterie.
Tasting Notes: Exceptionally mature yet vibrant, combining citrus and tropical fruit with pastry sweetness, warming spice, mature oak and intriguing savoury notes.
Nose: Musty old-school whisky character with brandy snaps, ginger and almond flakes.
Palate: Clementines, shortcrust pastry, gingernuts, aniseed and grilled pineapple.
Finish: Vanilla ice cream, lemongrass, applewood and a distinctive savoury hint of Serrano ham.
