Bussola Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva 2013

An exceptional and deeply complex Amarone offering aromas of dried black cherry, fig, plum, dark chocolate, tobacco, leather and exotic spice. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, with concentrated layers of dried fruit, cocoa, espresso and savory notes supported by velvety tannins and balanced acidity, leading to an extraordinarily long and elegant finish.

Food Pairing: Braised beef short ribs, venison, lamb shank, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle dishes and blue cheeses.

The wines here are good, at times very good. During my last visit it was inferred that larger wood barrels will soon become standard, replacing the small barrels that are currently in use. Kirsch, wood smoke and sandalwood, with mocha and cocoa notes from the oak. The palate is full, toothsome and nicely developed, flowing long across the beautifully hewn tannins, with oak and grape notes. This is a very impressive showing. As good a wine as any I have had here. Drink or hold, as this will continue to age well.

Long and creamy, this compact, concentrated, full-bodied red swathes supple tannins in a cloak of sun-dried cherry and date fruit flavors, with aromatic hints of candied orange peel and eucalyptus and a minerally underpinning that echoes on the finish. Drink now through 2029. 2,000 cases made.
