About the Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 2023
Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 2023 is an elegant, vibrant, and remarkably pure expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir, meticulously crafted from a blend of biodynamically farmed estate vineyards including Burn Cottage, Sauvage, and Sappa. It reveals a highly fragrant and lifted bouquet of wild strawberries, bright red cherries, and citrus peel, seamlessly layered with savory nuances of dried herbs, wet bark, mocha, and delicate floral notes. The palate is medium-bodied, refined, and beautifully textured, balancing crunchy, fine-grained tannins with a lively, energetic core of acidity. Fermented with a portion of whole clusters and aged in French oak, it culminates in a highly expressive, earthy, and long-lasting finish that distinctly reflects its unique glacial terroir.
Food Pairing:
Pairs beautifully with pan-seared duck breast, rich venison ragù, savory wild mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables, and medium-aged pecorino cheese.
96 Points - James Suckling
Bright and lifted aromas of strawberries, wild raspberries, citrus peel and cherries on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannins giving notes of blackberries, mocha, lead pencil and wet bark. Refined and pure with 5% whole-cluster. Drink or hold.
95 Points - Wine Spectator
Elegant, plush and lush, with fresh flavors of black cherry, raspberry preserves and lingonberry jam. Herbal accents of dried thyme, sage and matcha, along with whiffs of white pepper and crushed pine needle, linger on the long, expressive finish. Drink now through 2038.
92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is stalky, spicy and bright, with note of Campari/blood orange that mingle alongside dark chocolate, coffee, blood plum and star anise. If anything, this feels slightly lean rather than plush, but it works well within the scope of the wine. In the mouth, the tannins and acidity work together as one, making this wine feel integrated, serious, and fun, all at once. Recommended. It is very fine. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
