Bruichladdich Octomore 16.1

Serving as the foundational benchmark for the sixteenth annual iteration of Bruichladdich’s iconic super-heavily peated series, Bruichladdich Octomore 16.1 acts as the definitive control profile or "reference" point from which the collection's further cask experiments deviate. Distilled in 2019 from the 2018 harvest of 100% Scottish Mainland Concerto barley, the grain was malted to an immense 101.4 PPM. To preserve the raw purity of the distillate, the spirit was matured for five full years entirely in first-fill American oak bourbon barrels and bottled at a powerful cask strength of 59.3% ABV. The nose is strikingly vibrant and complex, introducing an intriguing opening of crisp orchard fruits, sea spray, and lemon zest beautifully enveloped by dry, aromatic campfire smoke, followed by soft undertones of white chocolate, dried heather, and savory iodine. On the palate, it delivers an immediate yet surprisingly smooth and delicate wave of peat smoke intertwined with rich salted caramel, honeydew melon, apricot, and sweet malt sugars. Mid-palate exploration reveals hints of cinnamon, sea salt, creamy toffee, and toasted coconut over a soft mineral foundation. The finish is remarkably long, warm, and lingering, with the signature peat smoke taking center stage alongside cracking black pepper, dark chocolate, and a final hint of briny sea salt.
