About the Brancaia Il Blu 2019
Brancaia Il Blu 2019 is an incredibly sophisticated, complex, and full-bodied Super Tuscan red wine that marks the 30th anniversary of this legendary flagship bottling. Composed primarily of premium Merlot alongside Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the estate's top-performing vineyards in Radda and Castellina in Chianti, each variety is aged separately for 18 months in French oak barriques (two-thirds new) before blending and refining for an additional three months in concrete vats. In the glass, it reveals a dark, concentrated ruby hue, opening with stunning aromas of wild blackberries, blackcurrants, violets, cocoa, and ground peppercorns. The palate is dense, velvety, and seamlessly structured, delivering layers of sweet dark fruits, licorice, and espresso framed by firm, ultra-fine tannins and a lifting mineral acidity that persists long into a polished finish.
Food Pairing: This robust, elegant red pairs beautifully with herb-crusted roasted rack of lamb, slow-braised wild boar, or prime cuts of grilled beef.
This has gorgeous aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, peppercorns, cloves, mocha, hazelnuts and dried herbs. Polished and creamy, with a medium to full body and firm, velvety tannins. Long, supple and elegant. Delicious already, but better from 2024.
95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A terrific blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is an organic red blend from the forested hills of Tuscany. The 2019 Il Blu is recognized by its modern blue label (and fun orange capsule) and its contemporary winemaking style. It offers seamless richness, elegant intensity and dark fruit weight. Italians might use the word "ruffiano" to describe it. The translation falls somewhere between "pleaser" and "panderer" but with a positive spin. Perhaps the most agreeable part of this barrique-aged wine is its availability, with an ample 42,000 bottles made.
93 Points - Wine Spectator
A tightly wound style, with black cherry and blackberry flavors wrapped in a grip of dusty tannins. Reveals earth, tar and eucalyptus elements as this stretches out on the finish. Fresh and balanced. Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2025 through 2038.
Heavy reduction on the nose of this wine meets blackberries, violets, gravel and tar, while vanilla sneaks out later. The palate is a chocolaty-berry blend with heat both peppery and spicy, then pivots elegantly to vanilla and baking spices. Dense but not cloying, it has pliant tannins and glittering acid.
