Bottle Info: This whiskey is a 100% American peated single malt from Boulder Spirits in Colorado. It was bottled exclusively for "The Edmonton Whisky Forum". The whisky was distilled in June of 2016 and was placed in a #3 char (heavily charred) virgin oak barrel for nearly seven years before being bottled in May of 2023 at 57% abv. 180 bottles are being released in Edmonton with the remainder of the cask being sold at the distillery. When you first crack this bottle you will find it is a little bit tight with the flavours being somewhat muted, but once the bottle has a chance to open up you are in for a real treat!
Tasting Notes: This is a fruit forward whisky where the fruit is more prominent than the extremely subtle peat and smoke. The peat is more of an earthy note that compliments, rather than dominates the whisky. It is almost like walking through a damp forest where a fire may have been extinguished several days, or even weeks, before. Once the fruit subsides you should start to pick up on some rich, dark chocolate flavours as well as a light cola note that you often get with Boulder expressions. At 57%, this whisky can handle a few drops of water which should open up those fruit and chocolate notes even more. Like all great bottles, this one evolves as you work your way through it so that each dram will be different from the last. Enjoy!
