About the Tenuta di Biserno Lodovico 2012 3L Double Magnum
After many years of identifying the best Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Verdot parcels within the boundaries of their Bolgheri estate with the support of the famous oenologist Michel Rolland, the Antinori family discovered in the early 2000s that in the midst of this microclimate and terroir there was an even more special small vineyard whose results once again surpassed those of the larger area. It was immediately clear to all involved that this unique character had to be vinified and highlighted separately - this was the birth of today's cult wine Lodovico.
As the vines age, Lodovico comes of age. With the 2012 vintage, it is not better now, but a little more nuanced than its predecessors. Ripe, dark fruits on the nose. Highly complex on the palate, with a depth and tannic structure that impressively reflect the age of the vines, plus a freshness and acidity framework that flanks the berry potpourri in a balanced way and, together with the ultra-fine tannin, leads into a long, firm finish. A multi-layered red with a strong character and the necessary storm and stress for the winner's podium.

The 2012 Lodovico is a breakout wine that marks the beginning of its own distinct identity. This is a complete, 360-degree expression that is also showing very nicely at this moment in its drinking window. I'd say it is on the cusp of its tasting apex. The vines were planted in 2003 and 2004, so they were still young when this wine was made. Still, the quality of fruit is articulate and intense with blackberry, cinnamon, wet earth and pressed rose petal.

You'll find aromas of cassis, French oak, cedar and blue flower on this full-bodied red. Made with Cabernet Franc and a tiny amount of Petit Verdot, the polished structured palate delivers black currant, star anise, espresso and aromatic herb set against fine-grained tannins that leave a firm finish.
