About the Bereche & Fils Le Cran Ludes Premier Cru 2017
Bérêche & Fils Le Cran Ludes Premier Cru 2017 is a rare, single-vineyard grower Champagne crafted from equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in "Le Cran," an exceptional plot in the Premier Cru village of Ludes on the Montagne de Reims. Harvested from low-yielding vines planted in 1969 and 1970 on chalk and deep clay soils, the wine undergoes barrel fermentation with natural yeasts, blocked malolactic fermentation, and extended aging under cork before disgorgement with a low Extra Brut dosage. In the glass, it displays a radiant gold color with a refined, energetic perlage. The nose is complex, yielding aromas of yellow orchard fruit, lemon oil, toasted brioche, crushed chalk, and dried flowers. On the palate, it is full-bodied, taut, and structured, delivering vibrant citrus depth, savory minerality, and a long, chalk-driven finish.
Food Pairing: Pairs superbly with roasted lobster, seared sea scallops, roasted poultry, white truffle dishes, aged Comté, and turbot in beurre blanc sauce.

The 2017 Le Cran Ludes Premier Cru, produced from equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced from three parcels in Ludes, is typically among the most dependable offerings from Bérêche. The vines, rooted in shallow soils with a mere 30 centimeters of topsoil above chalk bedrock, benefit from both western and eastern exposures. Disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of three grams per liter, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of pear, honeysuckle and rye bread, mingling with toasted nuts and exotic fruit. On the palate, it is generous and charming, marked by tangy acidity and a vivid saline touch. While it doesn’t quite attain the crystalline purity and precision of Le Cran in less disease-challenged vintages—2017 being particularly difficult for Pinot Noir—it nonetheless represents a commendable achievement.
