About the Mauro Molino Gallinotto Barolo 2018 1.5L Magnum
Mauro Molino Gallinotto Barolo 2018 is a highly elegant, expressive, and classic single-vineyard Italian red wine that showcases the unique microclimate of the Gallinotto parcel, situated within the high-elevation Berri MGA of La Morra. Crafted entirely from hand-harvested Nebbiolo grapes grown in calcareous-clay soils, the wine undergoes a precise skin maceration before aging for at least 18 months in French oak barrels. In the glass, it displays a bright ruby red color with subtle garnet highlights, opening with an intriguing and complex bouquet of sour cherries, wild strawberries, and red currants, seamlessly layered with notes of fresh mint, eucalyptus, dried rose petals, and warm baking spices. On the palate, this medium-bodied red is remarkably balanced and vibrant, delivering juicy red fruit and herbal flavors structured by fine-grained, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity that finishes with a persistent, savory persistence and a refreshing trace of citrus peel.
Food Pairing: Pairs wonderfully with slow-cooked braised beef shank, wild mushroom risotto, rosemary-garlic roasted rack of lamb, or matured cheeses like aged Pecorino.
93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This wine carries a so-called fantasy name (Gallinotto is not an official MGA site), but fruit comes from the Berri vineyard in La Morra. The 2018 Barolo Gallinotto is a fine and delicate Nebbiolo with mild intensity, blue flower perfumes, wild berry and crushed stone.
91 Points - Wine Spectator
A meaty red, concentrated and lively, with flavors of cherry and plum and accents of licorice, iron and tobacco. Turns more streamlined on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2040.
90 Points - James Suckling
Pleasant red-berry and green-tobacco aromas. Medium-bodied with quite a lightweight feel this year and only a hint of tannin. But the flavors are fresh and good.
90 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Gallinotto is located in the Berri MGA in the commune of La Morra. This wine showcases the delicate nature of this area, with wafting aromas of sour cherries, red currants, medicinal herbs and baking spices. The palate is driven by tart red fruits and pretty floral accents. Superfine tannins and bright acidity keep the wine well balanced.
