About the Aldeia Velha Aguardente Bagaceira Envelhecida Brandy 700ml
Crafted in Portugal, Aldeia Velha is one of the country's most iconic and widely recognized brandies, specifically produced as an aguardente bagaceira envelhecida (aged grape pomace brandy). Similar in production philosophy to Italian Grappa or French Marc, bagaceira is created by fermenting and distilling the solid grape skins, seeds, and stems (bagaço) left over after pressing during wine production. Produced under the stewardship of Caves Campidouro (Enorita / Sogrape group), the grape pomace is carefully distilled in traditional copper alembic stills to extract a robust, highly aromatic spirit packed with indigenous grape character. Unlike unaged white bagaceiras, Aldeia Velha undergoes a significant period of maturation in oak casks (cascos de carvalho). This extended oak aging rounds out the spirit's rustic, punchy pomace edges, imparting a warm topaz color, velvety smoothness, and rich notes of toasted oak, dried fruit, vanilla, and gentle spice.
Food Pairing: Traditional Portuguese espresso (café bica), dark chocolate, roasted almonds, cured Portuguese hams (presunto), aged cheeses (such as Queijo da Serra da Estrela or Queijo de São Jorge), or traditional egg-based desserts (Pastéis de Nata).
Tasting Notes: Clear topaz-amber in appearance with warm golden copper highlights, a smooth medium body, and clean, coating tears.
Nose: Rich, warm, and expressive, opening with sweet grape pomace, dried raisins, and toasted oak wood, accompanied by subtle vanilla bean, orange peel, hazelnut, and a hint of earthy spice.
Palate: Smooth, round, and warm on the palate, featuring caramelized sugar, sweet raisin, and toasted oak upfront before unfolding into soft vanilla, dried fruit conserve, light tobacco leaf, and subtle peppery spice.
Finish: Medium-long, warm, and velvety with lingering notes of sweet oak wood, dried grape skin, toasted nuts, and a soft, comforting digestif warmth.
Serve: Best enjoyed neat at room temperature in a balloon snifter or small tulip tasting glass following a meal as a classic Portuguese digestif, or alongside a hot espresso.
