The vineyard is named Heide, where the Blaufränkisch grape thrives in the shell-rich limestone soil. Heide is located on the slopes of the Leithaberg mountain in Burgenland. The relatively high altitude and the proximity to both the Alps and Lake Neusiedl contribute to cool nights and winds, resulting in wines with good fruit character and a fine, fresh acidity.
The grapes are harvested by hand and then undergo an extra careful selection once they arrive at the winery. The winemaking process is carried out with as little intervention as possible. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using the grape’s own natural yeast, followed by an 18-day maceration with the skins. The wine is then aged in large oak barrels for 12 months. No additives are used, and the wine is neither fined nor filtered.
Birgit follows all the principles of biodynamic philosophy, and the vineyard has been certified by Demeter since 2009. This is an international certification for biodynamic agriculture based on the methods and philosophies introduced by Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy, in the early 1920s.
Aroma and taste
A beautiful ruby-red color and an invitingly fresh aroma of berries and spices. The flavor continues in the same vibrant style, with lively notes of blueberry, red currant, and sloe berries. The wine has good structure, with pleasant acidity and mineral tones. It pairs wonderfully with lamb or a stronger aged cheese.
